Cleaning Product Awareness

I hope you and your family are safe during this period.

As a safety note:

Everyone is more aware of the need for good sanitation habits, not only on a personal level, but in our homes as well. Right now, it may be difficult to find the cleaning supplies you have been used to using and there is often a desire to “mix whatever is around” to use for cleaning.

I came across some references about dangerous combinations that everyone should be aware of. When using bleach or ammonia it is important to remember that some combinations of cleaners can be extremely dangerous—even fatal!

DO NOT MIX THE FOLLOWING CLEANERS!

Bleach & Ammonia

• Why? Potentially deadly combination.
• Symptoms:
  • Coughing
• Shortness of breath
• Whizzing
• Watery eyes
• Throat, nose, or eye irritation

Bleach & Acidic Products

• Why?
  • Potentially deadly combination.
• Can be absorbed through your skin or inhaled.
• Creates Chlorine Gas.
• Symptoms:
  • Coughing
• Shortness of breath
• Whizzing
• Watery eyes
• Throat, nose, or eye irritation
• Vomiting
• Chest pain
• Examples of acidic products
  • Vinegar
  • Glass cleaners (Windex, etc)
  • Toilet Bowl Cleaners
  • Dishwashing Detergents
• CAN CAUSE DEATH!

BLEACH & ALCOHOL

• Why?
  • Creates Chloroform
• May be carcinogenic
• Symptoms:
  • Not immediately apparent.
